Where to stay in Mexico
Two coasts, two different trips. The Caribbean side is turquoise water and the most flights; the Pacific side has mountains, whale season and no sargassum.
-
Cancun Hotel Zone
A 14-mile strip between the Caribbean and a lagoon, a short ride from Cancun International. The most resorts and the most going on at night.
-
Riviera Maya
The coast running south of Cancun toward Playa del Carmen and beyond: bigger resort grounds, calmer beaches, and a longer transfer from the airport.
-
Tulum
Boutique hotels, cenotes and the cliff-top Maya ruins. Tulum has had its own airport since December 2023, though many flights still land in Cancun.
-
Puerto Vallarta
On the Pacific, with mountains behind the bay and no sargassum season. Humpback whales visit the bay roughly from December to March.
-
Los Cabos
Desert meets ocean at the tip of Baja California. Dramatic scenery and upscale resorts, though many of its beaches are too rough for swimming.
Choosing the area is the first thing she helps with.

Mexico questions, answered
Is it cheaper to book an all-inclusive through a travel agent?
Usually not more expensive, and planning with Kristina is free: the resorts and tour operators pay her. In her experience you pay the same package price as booking it yourself, and often less, because she compares packages across travel companies.
What is the best way to book an all-inclusive in Mexico?
Choose the coast first, Caribbean or Pacific, then the kind of resort, then compare packages that bundle flights and transfers. Kristina does the comparing across travel companies and sends you the options that fit; you choose.
How much does an all-inclusive trip to Mexico cost?
Most of the trips Kristina books come in under $5,000 per booking. The price moves with the season, the resort and your flights from home, so she prices real options for your dates rather than quoting a guess.
Cancun or Puerto Vallarta: which suits us?
Cancun has turquoise Caribbean water and the most flights from the US. Puerto Vallarta has the mountains, a real town to walk, whale season in winter and no sargassum. The area guide above has the detail.
Which parts of Mexico avoid sargassum?
Sargassum is a Caribbean and Atlantic seaweed, so the Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, does not get it. On the Caribbean side it can reach some beaches in the warmer months, and how much arrives changes from year to year and beach to beach.
Is it safe to travel to Mexico right now?
The U.S. State Department sets its Mexico travel advisory state by state, so read the state you are visiting: Quintana Roo for Cancun and Tulum, Jalisco for Puerto Vallarta, and Baja California Sur for Los Cabos. Levels change, so check the current one before you book.
